About Galley & Grain
Galley & Grain is an independent, English-language publication about kitchen design and remodeling. It is written for homeowners and renters who are planning a new kitchen, reworking an old one or simply trying to understand the choices in front of them before talking to a designer or contractor.
The name
A galley is the narrow, efficient kitchen of a ship, and it gave its name to one of the most practical kitchen layouts on land. Grain is the pattern of wood in a cabinet door or a butcher-block top, and the texture of stone and clay. Together they stand for what we care about: plans that work, and materials that last. Our logo shows a tap over a countertop and the lines of a wood grain.
What we cover
- Planning and layout: small kitchens, islands, cabinets, outdoor kitchens, planning software, remodeling stages and how to choose a designer.
- Styles and colour: French country, Tuscan and contemporary kitchens, and how to build a colour scheme that works in real light.
- Surfaces and fixtures: countertops, flooring, tile, sinks and faucets.
How we work
- Sourced. Measurements and rules come from published sources: the planning guidelines of the National Kitchen & Bath Association, building and electrical codes, standards bodies such as ANSI and the Tile Council of North America, and public agencies including the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, OSHA and the Federal Trade Commission. Each article lists its sources and the date it was last reviewed.
- General guidance, not a substitute for local rules. Building codes differ by place and edition, and every appliance has its own installation requirements. We explain the principles; your local building department, licensed trades and manufacturers' instructions have the last word.
- No invented prices. Kitchen costs vary enormously by region and specification. We do not publish price figures we cannot source and date.
- Independent. We sell nothing, accept no advertising, sponsored content or affiliate commissions, and do not recommend particular brands or retailers.
- One masthead, no personal bylines. Guides go out under the Galley & Grain name. You will find no customer quotes or endorsements here.
- Corrected openly. When guidelines or regulations change, or when a reader points out an error, we update the article and its review date.
This domain
Before Galley & Grain, kitchendesignersideas.com hosted another site, run by other people. We bought the expired name and started afresh: this magazine is unrelated to that earlier site, is not its successor and cannot answer for it. Nothing it published — words or pictures — has been carried over.
Some addresses on this domain received links over the years. Where a link pointed to a kitchen topic we cover, that address now leads to our own, newly written article on the same subject, and images that were linked from elsewhere have been replaced by new, freely licensed pictures on the same theme, credited on our credits page.
