Kitchen Sinks

Trends in Kitchen Sinks

by James Mahoney

Kitchens have evolved into more multi-functional spaces with separate zones that can stand alone, functionally, or work together as part of a greater whole. So it makes sense that Kitchen sinks have also evolved into full-service water stations that offer stylish design and many amenities.

Kitchen Sinks

The kitchen sink is the busiest work area in the kitchen. Kitchens today have taken on a more multi-functional roll with separate work zones. This has caused sinks to evolve into more full-service work stations. Because of the desire by homeowners to have kitchens that can be attractive and also efficient and easy to maintain at the same time this has helps to influence the development of kitchen sinks that can be both stylish as far at fitting in with the overall design of the kitchen, and be able to work well. This has created the need for kitchen sinks to be designed in configurations that can accommodate many functions. For instance, a stainless steel sink can serve as a dishwasher, cutting board, or a strainer.

Kitchen sinks today are available in multiple bowls of various sizes and shapes and come with many accessories such as drainers, cutting boards, soap dispensers, hot water dispensers, soft or purified water taps, and sprayers.

The sink materials that are still considered the best for kitchen sinks include stainless steel, which is considered to be more hygienic and trendy, and more traditional choices such as fireclay and ceramic, which are available in many colors.

Homeowners with kitchen islands are installing larger sinks in the island, to create a food preparation work zone. Also there is increasing use of the larger farmhouse sinks located on the back wall of the kitchen to be able to have a work space for clean-up.

Because of larger pots and skillets the double-sink is no longer adequate. Large single-basin kitchen sinks are the new trend. They tend to be visually stimulating as they go beyond the usual and ordinary.

The three design trends that are starting to be seen today with kitchen sinks are the commercial or professional look, the traditional or old world look, and the country farmhouse look with an apron front and available in single, double, and triple bowl size. Some homeowners are going with more customized kitchen sink solutions like galvanized troughs.

Another type of kitchen sink is the module design sink. Module kitchen sinks have easy installation and are considered to be "solid-surface fabricator friendly" These kind of kitchen sink also has an expanded backsplash area designed for easy clean up. This sink is an attractive solution for the most frequently used area of the kitchen.

Because of the need today for the kitchen sink to be able to multi-task as far as duties are concerned, the materials used for kitchen sinks today include fire clay, copper, titanium, as well as the familiar stainless steel.

Another material being used in kitchen sinks today is granite. Granite composite sinks have the advantage of being able to take a lot of wear since they are resistant to denting, cutting, chipping, staining, and are almost completely fade proof. The granite surface is non-absorbent and non-porous, and is very heat resistant. They are rather expensive and not available in a shiny finish. Granite kitchen sinks are available in different depths.

Other materials used in kitchen sinks today are soapstone. Soapstone is a natural mineral substance that is easy to maintain. It is available in many one-of-a-kind color choices. Soapstone kitchen sinks are available in styles like the farmhouse sinks with apron fronts.

Copper kitchen sinks are the choice for homeowners wanting the old world look for their kitchens. Copper sinks are made of solid copper and can be available in polished and satin nickel finishes. They are also available as single or double sinks, and in several shapes. Copper kitchen sinks are easy to care for and can be re-polished to create a brighter appearance.
