Although installing a kitchen island is a dream for many, it can create an inefficient space if not planned properly.

When planning a kitchen island design, determine the optimum layout for your kitchen. Plans for building a kitchen island typically look much like the U-shaped floor plan, with the exception that one side of the “U” is actually the island.

Installing a kitchen island has many advantages over the U-shaped design…

• With the help of a kitchen island design, the cook can circle the island and access the entire kitchen
• Makes it easier to create a closed off work triangle to allow other cooks to assist you

If you do not have enough space for a kitchen island design, consider a portable island. With a portable island, you can pull the island out when in use -- and then tuck it away later so it is out of the way.

If you want more permanent plans for building a kitchen island but do not have the space, consider a peninsula. Unlike the free standing island, a peninsula is attached to the wall at one end.

As with the kitchen island design, you can still work around the majority of the peninsula and can create the same open feel. A peninsula can be an attractive alternative by making it possible to add a breakfast bar to the other side of the peninsula.
