What's a Good Color for Kitchen Walls and Cabinets?

by James Mahoney

You've got the green light for a major kitchen remodel. You're excited. But you're also probably overwhelmed. Even the most basic question has too many answers. Really, what is a good color for kitchen walls and cabinets these days?

The answer should really be: whatever you want. The options are endless. But here are a few tips for taking the guesswork out of choosing your own good color for kitchen remodeling.

A Good Color for Kitchen Walls

If you're starting from scratch, you're probably staring at a white wall with paint chips that span the entire rainbow. Finding a good color for kitchen walls doesn't have to be this difficult. Narrow it down by what you like and what you don't like. Think of what emotions and feelings the colors admit. Pay attention to what's popular and weigh it against what's timeless.

If you've always loved the color yellow, but think it's a bit loud, consider the idea of a warm, calming hue of the shade like butter. If you were never a fan of red - if it's a bit saucy for your tastes - cut it from your list and stop trying to find an acceptable shade. And while you're at it, remove oranges and pinks, too, since they're in the same color family and obviously not a good color for kitchen walls.

The Search Continues: A Good Color for Kitchen Walls

If you love the calming feeling of blues and greens in a bathroom and the spa-like experience they create, consider whether or not that is a feeling you'd like while cooking dinner for the family. If it is, it's probably a good color for kitchen walls in your home. And remember that even if hues of chocolate and charcoal are all the rage these days on HGTV, if they don't suit your style or your home's color palette, they're probably not the best choice for you.

After some soul searching, you can easily narrow down your search for a good color for kitchen walls in your home. Kitchen paint can also always be easily changed - you're not marrying this color forever. And if you choose neutral colors throughout the rest of the space for big-ticket, more permanent items, paint is something that you can transform the space with years down the road.

A Good Color for Kitchen Cabinets

Traditionally, cabinets are found in varying shades of light wood, dark wood, and white. If you're at all concerned about the resale value of your home, it would make the most sense to stick with one of those three options as a good color for kitchen cabinets. Within each category, you have unlimited staining and material options to customize your kitchen look.

If you are feeling more adventurous, you can expand your horizons. In recent years, vintage style has crept back into the kitchen. One popular item that has made a comeback is retro metal cabinets. With the low-cost, easy-to-clean, inexpensive metal option comes a rainbow of color options.

Depending on your motif, a good color for these cabinets can range from fire engine red to pumpkin orange to cobalt blue. Since these cabinets are not usually readily available at big-box hardware stores, some online research will be necessary to find a good color for kitchen cabinets.
